How to Deal with Period Cramps

There might be a number of girls and women who go through their period without any suffering, excruciating pain or terrible mood swings. However, that is not really the case with most of us: we need to face a day or two or even more in the worst case scenario, when we are victims of period cramps. They can interfere with our social life, with our work and studies, and to be honest, it is not a good excuse to use to get a little rest. On the contrary, I am sure all of us would prefer not to have to go through the terror! So how can you make period cramps less painful?

  • Exercise is definitely a good way to improve your overall health and slim down your figure, but did you know that it can ease menstrual pains? Being physically active helps your body release endorphins, which are chemicals that interact with receptors in the brain and make us feel good and reduce perception of pain. You might want to take long walks, do a daily workout routine or whatever you are comfortable with, but regular physical activity will definitely have a positive impact.
  • Obviously, the most popular solution is pain relievers. Painkilling medicine is most effective if you take them at an early stage of the period cramps. Whether you go for aspirin or ibuprofen, you might want to keep some in your purse just in case. The bad news they might not work immediately.
  • Heat can also be quite useful in relieving pain. Heat up a towel, a pillow or take a hot water bottle or heating pad and place them on your abdomen. You can even put hot water in a water bottle and place it there! Heat can relieve pain since it opens vessels and improves blood flow. A warm shower or bath can also do the trick.
  • This is a more extreme option but oral contraceptives have been known to make periods lighter and reduce period cramps. Oral contraceptives thin the lining of the womb and the muscles do not contract so much.
  • Food and drink can also contribute to pain relieving. For instance, it is a good idea to consume less sugar, salt, caffeine and alcohol. Also, warm beverages will increase blood flow to your skin and will help your cramped muscles relax. Mint tea or hot lemon water are great options.
  • An abdominal massage is another good idea. Whether you are standing, sitting or lying down, massaging your abdomen and lower back can ease period cramps.
  • Last but not least, vitamins and supplements can be a good solution. Vitamin B6, magnesium and calcium supplements might be helpful, but consult with a doctor before starting to take them. Include foods rich in those nutrients in your diet. For example, you can consume more almonds, sesame seeds, spinach and leafy green vegetables, tuna, chicken, beef and potatoes. Sounds good, doesn’t it?
